Welcome to the Book of the Week! This book holds a special memory; the first step into a freshman English class. As nerve-wracking as it was for many, this book acted as an important milestone into that class, which stood as a disciplinary lesson to always read–and that a pop quiz might always be around the corner.
This epic tale has always been a staple of academic beginnings, revealing lessons and adventures that resonate in our first year. Much has changed since freshman year for many Breakers, just like how so much has changed since the Greek times. Nevertheless, this story endured around 2,800 years of changes and challenges, and what it means to be a Breaker is to do the same.
The Odyssey by Homer is not just a book, it is a man’s journey through life. King Odysseus faces treacherous seas and mythical lands, reflecting our triumphs and errors we face everyday. This beautiful whirlwind of words highlights the key aspects of living through the use of the spiritual world, like sorceresses and mythical creatures, all to spark our imaginations.
Odysseus was a king, a warrior, and a leader, and everything else any man could ever want. Even so, his deepest unfulfilled desire to be a husband and father again weighed him down. This emotional struggle with temptation and distractions from his goal was always driven by the memories of his wife, Penelope, and his son, Telemachus. In the scenes in Ithaca, with Penelope’s vigorous weaving and Telemachus’ endless search for his father, a profound human element is inflicted on the reader. The ache of a separation and the desperate hope for reunion in this story serves as a reminder that even the wealthiest man can have his regrets.
In conclusion, The Odyssey was more than a required reading. In my opinion, it was the first step for many of us into advanced English literature, and a thrilling adventure through times of old. That is the true reason why this book was chosen as this week’s Book Of The Week. The deeply rooted connections between humans and the supernatural will always leave a lasting impression, forever transforming our minds to reflect on their personal lives. And through it all, never forget to keep adventuring, Breakers!
