For Izzy Bertolucci, committing to a Division 1 soccer program at Cal isn’t just the achievement of a dream, it’s the reward of everything she’s been working toward. “This is something I’ve been focused on for a very long time,” says Izzy. “I’ve had to miss events in the past because of the demands of my sport but winning big games with my teammates who are truly amazing people is such a great experience.”

As a commanding and powerful forward of 6 years, Izzy has built a reputation for herself as a soccer player – an impressive one at that. She toured many locations when deciding where to play in college, but in the end, UC Berkeley was the obvious choice. “I knew I wanted to be somewhere that had a good culture,” she says. “I needed to be in a place where there were good player-coach relationships and equally good academics.” The recruiting process was exciting, but also intense. Balancing training, school, and campus visits required serious time management and sacrifices. Izzy credits the people around her for helping her stay focused throughout it all. “I had support from my family and my coaches. They helped remind me to stay persistent even if coaches didn’t respond right away and that it doesn’t mean they hate me,” she says. “I’ve never had issues with sticking with tough training and even tougher games because it’s something that I love and want to continue to do,” she says. “On days when I’m not so motivated I have to remind myself of that. I know it’s going to take hard work to play at this new level, but I’m excited for it.” Now, with her college future secured, Izzy is looking ahead. She doesn’t want to stop at college, her goals are bigger. “I’m excited to play at the Division 1 level and I would love to play after college. Now that the pressure of committing is off my shoulders I have to continue getting better,” she says. With that pressure behind her, Izzy shares some tips for others going through the same process. “My advice for players who are going through the recruitment process is reach out. Even if you think you’re annoying, you aren’t. Do this as much as you can. Staying consistent with your emails and communication is everything.” In many ways, this commitment is a hope made real. But for Izzy, it’s clear that the dream isn’t finished, it’ll continue to grow. And with her mindset, drive, and love for the game, there’s no doubt she’s ready for what comes next in her soccer career.
