On April 22, 2022, Apple TV+ announced the approval of a new straight-to-series (a full, filmed series without filming a pilot) featuring, and to be written and produced by, Aquaman star Jason Momoa about the historical unification of the Hawaiian Islands (occurring between 1782 and 1810). Eventually, on March 31, 2025, Apple released a sneak peek trailer to the public with a hard release date set for August 1, 2025. The series would focus on the story of Ka’iana, a noble chief from Kauai and Hawai’i who fought on numerous sides during the period of unification and notably left the islands on a yearlong voyage with a British crew in 1787. For cast and crew, the series features a mix of well-known actors, like Temuera Morrison of Star Wars-fame playing the ruthless King Kahekilli of Maui and Momoa playing Ka’iana, and newer faces like Kaina Makua, who plays King Kamehamaha of Hawai’i despite having no previous professional acting experience: prior, Makua worked as a taro farmer and non-profit executive.
Beyond its star-studded lineup, Chief of War distinguishes itself through its cultural authenticity and commitment to Hawaiian storytelling. The production was filmed primarily across O‘ahu and the Big Island, with direction from Native Hawaiian historians and language experts to ensure accuracy in dialogue, costume design, and depiction of traditional customs. For Jason Momoa and his team, the series represents more than just entertainment. It’s a reclamation of history and a celebration of Hawaiian identity brought to global audiences.
