For 76 years the Pacific Grove Breakers have fought against the Carmel Padres for the “Shoe” – a bronze football cleat from 1948 that is mounted on a wooden pedestal . This tradition has become a staple at both schools, but as Breakers, we have brought our love, support, and encouragement down to the field year after year. We go all out on a spirit week, lunch time games, and a rally leading up to the Friday night game. Groups around campus come together to not only support the football team, but the school as a whole rallies against our long time rivals the Padres. This year the game will be held at our local community college MPC due to Carmel’s restriction on their field lights. The tickets will be limited and we can expect the stands to be packed with students, families, and town members. Previously, the Shoe Game took place at the beginning of the school year, but when Carmel moved down into Pacific Grove’s league, the game became the last game of the season, brewing the anticipation for players and viewers. Students around PGHS’ campus have many different feelings and opinions about the game. “I’m excited to play in a packed stadium and to beat Carmel,” says Nathaniel Wade, a senior football player. Sofie Lewis, an active member in our ASB leadership class, is also excited. “I’m looking forward to the cheers and chants during the game!” The student section for the game will be “Breaker Night” meaning all students should be repping their red, gold, or any PGHS merch! The student sections have been a huge hit at sports games with some personal favorites being USA night, Pink Out, and Gold Rush. With the Shoe Game being such a notorious game, we hope the student section is the best yet and we can truly show our Breaker Pride. Overall, this is a must watch game and we encourage all students to participate in the Shoe Week activities put on by the PGHS leadership class this week. As Breakers, no matter what clubs or groups you are involved in, whether you care about football or not, or just don’t have any plans on that Friday night, everyone should all head down to MPC to support our fellow classmates for the biggest game of the year!
