As the new school year begins, Pacific Grove High School is under the leadership of a new principal, Mr. O’Meara. After five successful years at Soquel High, he is ready to lead PGHS through an exciting academic year. Mr. O’Meara shared his vision “to increase student achievement” and reflected on what makes PGHS special in an interview with our school paper.
Q: What are your main goals for the school year?
A: This year I aim to increase student achievement and learning by focusing on three main avenues. Those are community, collaboration, and connectedness.
After discussing his goals for the year, Mr. O’Meara shared his thoughts on the atmosphere of PGHS.
Q: What are your thoughts on the student culture at PGHS?
A: I think that the school spirit, cohesion of each class, and traditions are some of the best parts of this school. I hope that we can all come together to form a whole school community.
While leadership brings many challenges, Mr. O’Meara highlighted what he finds most fulfilling as a principal.
Q: What is the best part of being a principal?
A: The best part without a doubt is being part of a team. This position gives me a lot of connections that I enjoy having.
Along with his focus on academics and community, Mr. O’Meara is enthusiastic about getting involved in the wider aspects of student life, including activities outside the classroom.
Q: Do you plan to be involved with student extracurriculars?
A: Most definitely. I enjoyed the high school experience when in high school, and I plan to be present and visible for this school’s events.
To conclude the interview, Mr. O’Meara turned the conversation back to the students, leaving us with one final question:
Mr. O’Meara: What does it mean to you to “be a breaker?”
