The Pacific Grove volleyball team has faced challenges like no other this season. Losing three key players to injury is not an easy thing to come back from, however, the volleyball team was able to rally at their tournament in Harbor before fall break.
Currently, there are seven seniors on the volleyball team who have all played since middle school and are integral parts of the team. Captains Savannah Hardy and Juliette Souza have shown immense leadership this season. When asked about the season, Hardy replied, “our team was so dependent on our seniors last year, so we have had to adapt and become more unified as a group. Since there are so many underclassmen on the team, they are going to be able to carry on our legacy after we graduate.” Other captain, Juliette Souza, is “really proud of the girls and the team’s ability to come together and win games.”
The senior girls have not only been important to the team, but the senior moms have as well. Petula Lee, the team mom, has helped coordinate the girl’s seasons and team bonding since her daughter started playing volleyball. Another senior mom, Jean Gorman, has been taking team and game photos for the girls since their freshman year. She, along with other moms, is going to miss the camaraderie of sitting together at games, cooking pre-bus meals for the girls, and seeing their daughters have fun on and off the court.
Coach Kyle Mountain has coached the varsity team for the past four years; the seniors were his “very first middle school class, so they will always hold a very special place” in his heart. Overall, the team has had to overcome many obstacles this season, and everyone is really proud of each other and the work they have done.
A great last season for Savannah, Juliette, Grace, Sofie, Lili, Ella, and Eve! Thanks for a great last-past four years!
