A Halloween Special: Breaker Football vs Aztecs

On October 31st in Pacific Grove the whole town was eerily quiet, but the football game vs Soledad was even spookier than the streets, with the stands filled with monsters, thieves, and vampires. The chilling holiday consumed the stadium; posters covered in Halloween messages hung on the stands and Mrs. Lopez handed out candy to all the Trick or Treaters. The JV football team was not able to play due to a lack of players, but the Varsity players were clearly more than just skeletons based on the guts they showed during the game.

The end of the first quarter was relatively close, but soon after quarterback Ersi Kullolli was injured the other team started to gain some leeway. Despite this, the zombified cheer team kept the energy up and were joined by the middle school cheerleaders to double the Breaker spirit. The Breaker Band also embraced the holiday vibe and played Ghostbusters, Tainted Love and other Halloween specials from the stands.

The Breaker Girls performing Thriller with Billy the Breaker at halftime

When the game reached halftime, Drum Major Conor O’Brien dressed as Gru and the band dressed as his minions put on a truly despicable show, lining up on the field to play some more Halloween classics. When Micheal Jackson’s Thriller started, the Breaker Girls joined along with their dance routine, dressed as zombies covered in gory wounds and wearing ripped shirts. As a Halloween surprise Billy the Breaker also made an appearance, running onto the field and dancing with the Breaker girls for the end of the song. Following the minions, zombies, and Billy, the two cheer teams put on an impressive show to finish off the halftime performances. Afterwards, the student section was practically buzzing with festive energy and a sugar rush, which had everybody excited and enthused.

Unfortunately, the game ended all too soon. PG fought hard, but in the end Soledad was the winner, 6 – 28. Afterwards, sophomore Northrup Kirk reflected, “I think the game on Halloween was positive because the whole community was there rooting us on and I really appreciate the Breaker spirit. I love how we had it on Halloween, I hope we can do it next year.”

Even though the game was a loss, the fun experienced by the players, students, parents, and everyone attending the game made it a night to remember.
