On Friday, May 8, PGHS’ Girls Softball team took to the field at PG Municipal Field for their senior night. Following being promoted to the Gabilan League at the end of the 2025 season, the Breakers had struggled throughout the season. Coming into the game with an 0-13 record in league and a 5-17 record overall, the girls were looking for a win to end their home season. After a close back-and-forth game, the Breakers broke the 13 game losing streak with a 5-4 win over the Salinas Cowboys.

The night began with three heartfelt speeches coming from underclassmen in honor of the seniors heading onto the diamond at Muni for the last time. Emma von Ruden shared emotional descriptions of third baseman Izzy Turner’s performance over the years, Dylan Llantero celebrated center fielder Jasmine Booker’s high school career, and Grace Pottharst recognized star pitcher Alex Giammanco.
The Breakers held the Salinas Cowboys at no runs in the first inning and came out swinging, putting the first run on the scoreboard. After a few errors in the field, Salinas put up two runs in the third inning, retaking the lead. PG bit back quickly in the fourth and scored three runs, taking the score to 4-2 in favor of the Breakers. The Cowboys tied it up in the fifth and both teams went scoreless in the sixth, taking the game to the seventh and final inning at 4-4. Between Giammanco’s pitching and PG’s solid defense, the Breakers made it to the bottom of the seventh. With two clutch hits and a walk from the lineup, PG had the bases loaded with only one out. Sophomore catcher Destiny Buckles hit a hard ground ball past the infield to score a runner, winning the game 5-4 with her walk off.
The Breakers stayed solid throughout the game and performed well under pressure. Freshman Riley O’Brien observed that “the team really seemed to demonstrate [their] growth and got a very deserved win”. The growth was clear with PG’s 11 hits — including two doubles and five RBIs.

Some standout performances from the Breakers included Giammanco’s seven innings pitching where she only gave up six hits and no earned runs. Booker showed up at the plate, getting three hits in four at-bats, scoring two runs herself. Freshman Lyvia Maciel also recorded two hits with one double and one RBI. Buckles was also integral to the win, scoring a run and providing 2 RBIs, including the game-winner. Coach Turner reinforced the idea of growth and exceptional performance that night, agreeing that the girls played hard and got an impressive win for senior night.
Despite a tough season, PG stayed resilient and clinched a great win for the seniors. Now, they look forward to CCS competition and the tail end of three impressive high school careers for Turner, Booker, and Giammanco.
