At PGHS, the Boys and Girls Varsity swim teams are combined, facing each practice set together. Lilikoi Wright (12) is this year’s swim captain, a part of the team since her freshman year, and in the pool since the age of eight. She has also played for the PGHS Girls Varsity Water Polo team for the last four years and has committed to play Water Polo next year at Cabrillo College in Santa Cruz. Today, Lilikoi is explaining how she earned her spot as captain and what her role entails.
Isa: Hi Lili! How did you become the swim team captain – what made you so qualified?
Lilikoi: I’ve been on the team for four years, and Coach Trent felt that I was one of the strongest members of the team in and out of the pool.
Isa: What is your favorite part about PGHS’ swim team?
Lilikoi: We find a way to make practices fun, like Easter Egg Hunts and Trivia!
Isa: As a captain, what specific jobs do you do?
Lilikoi: I fill out meet cards, hype up the team, and make sure everyone is energized for practice and meets.
Isa: Now that the season is over, how do you feel PCALs went?
Lilikoi: I think we all came together, cheering each other on. I feel that everyone had their best race, and we became closer as a team.
Isa: How are you feeling now that your last school sports season has finished?
Lilikoi: I’m feeling really sad – no more locker room debriefs! I’m going to miss the girls and the chats we have, but I’m excited to see what next year’s swimmers accomplish!
Lilikoi has been a role model and rock for the 2025 PGHS Girls Varsity Swim team. Her devotion to the sport and being a team player made her an inspiring team captain. She took on the challenges of mermaid training by creating a positive and fun environment every day. She will be a very missed asset to the team!
