As the basketball season comes to an end, this school year’s three on three tournament kicks off strong. Ten teams competed for the win this year, each containing players with different skill levels. For 5 lunch periods last week, students took their seats in the bleachers to watch these 8 minute half court games take place.
The first day consisted of four games, one on each side of the court. The first team was “Wet Ball”, consisting of Max Ehret, Bennett Paterson, and Michael Roldan, versus the “Double Stuffed Oreos,” with Brody Edmonds, Camerson Talley, and Max Luttrell. Both teams played well, but Double Stuffed Oreos won in a close game. Across the court, the “Schooners” featuring Flynn Ryan, Isaac Sanchez, and Gabe Valencia faced off against “La Pulga,” made up of Jamo Boone, Cassidy Flaherty-Catlin and Charlie Sorenson, with Schooners holding a steady lead until the end. “Average Shmur” with Taj Davis, Ayden Knab, and Steve DiMercurio played “Gurts Gooners,” who had Cameron Navarro, Eddie Robbins, and Garret Kuska. Average Shmur took the win, putting Gurts Gooners into the loser’s bracket. The last game of the day was “Le Bricks,” including Jaxon Dalhamer, Christian Adint, and Oliver Crandall versus the “Dominican YN’s,” made up of Paul Ramirez, James Lowen, and Avery Ayala. The game was close, with Le Bricks taking the win by one point.
On Tuesday “Wo-Men” played Double Stuffed Oreos, with Double Stuffed Oreos securing another win. La Pulga then played against Wo-Men in the loser’s bracket and La Pulga took the win, fully eliminating Wo-Men from the tournament. Across the court, Ferocious Hamsters played Schooners and the latter won, sending the Ferocious Hamsters into the loser’s bracket.
Wednesday Le Bricks played Double Stuffed Oreos with Hunter Scheiber subbing in for Oliver Crandall. Though Double Stuffed Oreos had great defense, Le Bricks took the win in that game. Wet Ball also played against Ferocious Hamsters that same day, with Ferocious Hamsters winning the second game of the loser’s bracket. Furthering the loser’s bracket, Cassidy Flaherty-Catlin, Charlie Sorenson, and Jamo Boone played in place of La Pulga, competing against the Dominican YN’s. They quickly fell behind, and the Dominican YN’s took the win. The second to last game was between the Schooners and Average Shmur, with the Schooners winning. The last game of the day was Gurt’s Gooners versus the Ferocious Hamsters, with the Hamsters winning and advancing in the loser’s bracket.
Starting on Thursday, Double Stuffed Oreos battled against the Feriocous Hamsters, and Double Stuffed Oreos won, taking them to the semi-finals. Average Shmur and the Dominican YN’s faced off, with Average Shmur winning. Then, for a chance out of the loser’s bracket, the Double Stuffed Oreos played Average Shmur, with the Oreos taking the win and having another shot at the finals. The last game of the day for the winner’s bracket was Schooners versus Le Bricks, with Schooners securing the win and their spot in the final game.
The championship day kicked off with Double Stuffed Oreos playing a full court game against Le Bricks, in which Double Stuffed Oreos won seventeen to eight. Double Stuffed Oreos then went on to play the championship game against Schooners. Great plays were made by both teams, including multiple three point shots. Ultimately, the final score was fourteen to seven in Schooner’s favor.
The tournament was a wonderful success, giving everyone a source of entertainment during lunch. Students enjoyed watching the games and rooting for their favorite teams. Overall, everyone played great and tried their hardest, and we look forward to our next school wide basketball tournament.
