Prom season is in full swing, and that means the beginning of promposals! Asking someone to a dance can be nerve wracking, but there’s lots of ways to make it easier. After interviewing multiple anonymous upperclassmen, here are some tips to remember before you ask out your future date.
First, if you’re planning on making a sign, ensure it’s thoughtful and personalized. When asked about their dream promposal, one student said, “My favorite way to be promposed to would probably be a fun sign with something I am interested in, such as a favorite band, movie, food, etc.” Creating a poster can be a great way to ask someone to a dance, but making sure it’s personalized to their interests is the key to securing your date. It’s also important to recognize what your future date is comfortable with in terms of the asking itself. Public promposals can be amazing, but not everyone wants to be put on the spot in front of a crowd. When asked about their opinion on public promposals, one upperclassman noted, “I think it just depends on the type of person, and they can be really cool when they’re extravagant, but for me I would rather have it be private so there is no need to be reluctant to say yes or no under pressure”. If you know that your hopeful date loves dramatics and excitement, a public promposal could be a thoughtful gesture. However, if they’re more low-key, or if you’re just not sure, stay on the safe side and avoid asking in front of a crowd. Finally, consider whether you’re asking someone out because you genuinely want to, or because you feel pressured to go with a date. One student mentioned, “I think it would be fun to be asked to prom at some point, but I don’t think for me, personally, it’s necessary to have a good time.” Having a date to prom is great, but going with friends is just as fun. In fact, going with someone who’s company you don’t really enjoy can make the night significantly less pleasant for both parties, so take the time to consider the reasons behind your decision to ask out your future date. Overall, the key to a successful dance is making decisions without any kind of pressure, and knowing that no matter who you go with, prom is meant to be enjoyed!
