Peasants loaf was a common food and often considered a staple during the middle ages. It is consumed by peasants of course, as the name mentions. Although that was hundreds of years ago, the tradition is still visible today.
You’ll only need about 5 simple ingredients. Flour, salt, sugar, instant yeast, and water. You’re going to need a large bowl to whisk all the ingredients together. Add about 4 cups of flour, 2 teaspoons of salt, 2 teaspoons of sugar, roughly 2 and ¼ teaspoons of yeast, and finally add 2 cups of lukewarm water. After you have whisked all those ingredients together, you’re going to need to cover the bowl with a damp towel to let the dough rise. Let it sit for about 2 hours. Once it has risen, use forks to puncture the dough. Then, you’re going to need to use those two forks to split the dough into two, so you’ll have two pieces of dough. Once you’re all done with that get a glass oven-proof bowl, preferably 1 liter Pyrex glass bowl. Rub butter throughout the bowl so the dough doesn’t stick. Place your two portions of dough in the bowl, wait about 30 minutes for the dough to rise to the rim of the bowl. Lastly, transfer bowls to an oven and let it cook for about 45 minutes at 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Remove to let it cool, then cut it open and enjoy!
I chose to feature this recipe because I used to bake this bread with my mom when I was younger and I really enjoyed doing that. Baking elicits these connections, so share the recipe with family or friends to make the same memories. Happy baking!
