Holidays are often known for their food: The 4th of July has grills heating up, Halloween gives kids buckets of candy, and Valentine’s Day adorns people with chocolates. However, no holiday is as food-centric as Thanksgiving. In order to see how PGHS felt about their Thanksgiving meals and what their thoughts on staple foods were, The Newsbreaker conducted a survey in the “We Are PG” Google Classroom.
In terms of favoritism, mashed potatoes won by a long shot, amassing 35.6% of the vote, showing even a side dish can impress families. Mac and Cheese came in second with 17.8%, and stuffing brought home third with only 8.9% of the votes. The rest were distributed between commonplace dishes like turkey and pie, but none came close to the top three.

When asked about which foods were the most overrated, students of Pacific Grove High School declared that turkey doesn’t live up to its reputation. 36.7% of respondents said turkey is the most overrated while 19.8% contested that cranberry sauce is overhyped. Surprisingly, stuffing made its way onto third on this list as well, appearing to be a rather divisive food.
One of the best parts of Thanksgiving dinner is pie for dessert, and when asked to rank them, two are very clearly the favorites. With 48.9% of the vote, apple pie was the most beloved. Pumpkin pie took second with 42.2%, while pecan trailed far behind with only 8.9%.
Our final question let the Breakers propose a new delicacy to be added to the pantheon of Thanksgiving classics. Students gave very unique answers, including prime rib, greek pasta salad, cornbread, tacos, sushi, brussel sprouts, fruit salad, rice, and tri-tip.
It’s clear every Breaker enjoys their own take on Thanksgiving dinner, and it shows that regardless of what you eat, it’s who you eat it with that matters this holiday season.
