Hello to all the readers of The NewsBreaker. This year, I (Antony Gabrik) and my friend and co-editor-in-chief (Conor O’Brien) are looking forward to being editors of The NewsBreaker for the 2025-2026 school year. As we continue our transition into the world of digital journalism we thank you for your support, and are excited to see what stories our paper will cover this year!
The NewsBreaker started as a student club during online distance learning in 2020. Some of the earliest articles talked about the uncertainty of the pandemic and how students could stay connected online. The NewsBreaker was one of those ways that allowed students to collaborate over something that they cared about. Since then, The NewsBreaker has grown into a monthly issue with frequent online articles from both students in the club and those enrolled in the multimedia journalism class (started in 2024). The paper covers a wide variety of topics, such as our school sports, events, news, arts & entertainment, and more. If you are interested in seeing a specific topic or event covered, submit a coverage request form on the homepage of the website.
For prospective members of The NewsBreaker, the paper is a great chance to get involved with the school. Staff members have the opportunity to interview with other students, teachers, and coaches and build connections across campus. I myself started writing for The NewsBreaker my sophomore year and really enjoyed sports interviews in particular. Those articles encouraged me to get out to sporting events I never would have attended otherwise and get to meet students I had never spoken to before. Every athlete and coach really appreciated the recognition, and of course enjoyed reading the articles.
Since teaming up with the Multimedia Journalism Class, media coverage at PGHS has expanded to include our daily PG/TV bulletin (found on the homepage), podcasting, and the PGHS Literary Magazine.
The NewsBreaker is always looking for all types of creative students to join the staff— not just writers. Even a single article involves several different roles among the staff, from writers and editors to photographers and graphic designers. Stop by the table at club rush to learn more about The NewsBreaker and sign up for the 2025/26 year!
